  • Eyes Pro Sportfisher Gen3 Jungle Cock
  • Head Solarez Bone Dry

How to tie it

  1. Start the 140-denier black thread right at the eye to close the gap left by the salmon hook's return bend, and lay it evenly down the shank to just past the hook point.
  2. Catch the large oval tinsel in by the tip for the tag, take a few wraps back down the bend a touch, then five or six turns forward and tie off; strip the metallic coating off the tag end so only the thin core gets bound down and the body stays smooth.
  3. Tie in a small bunch of black Squirrel Tail at the base of the tag, about one shank long, with all the underfur pulled out; cut the butts at an angle so they taper.
  4. Take the thread forward to where the return bend ends and tie the Lagartun Oval Tinsel Silver Medium in along the side of the shank at that step — laid on the side it fills the gap the return bend leaves.
  5. Tie the Lagartun Flat Braid in at the same step, lined up with the return bend, then wrap it from the back of the body forward in touching turns to that step; the flat braid lies flatter than diamond braid and gives a smooth body.
  6. Rib forward over the body with six or seven open turns of the oval tinsel, capture it and trim the excess.
  7. Tie in the UV Polar Chenille with its fibers hanging downward so they sweep back as you wrap, and take three or four turns as a shoulder finishing right at the end of the return bend, leaving room for the collar and the eyes.
  8. Wet the tip of a black marabou feather, tie it in by that tip in front of the chenille, fold the tip back so it cannot pull out, stroke the fibers back by running the edge of your scissors down the quill, and take three to five wraps.
  9. Tie the Mallard Flank in the same way, choosing a feather whose good side is the longer one so it cups the marabou into a flat collar, fold one side over with the scissor edge, squash the stem and take three or four wraps.
  10. Tie one Pro Sportfisher Gen3 Jungle Cock eye to each side at a slight upward angle, matched for length, then trim the butts and wrap a neat head.
  11. Whip finish tight, then dab Solarez Bone Dry all the way round and rotate the fly to shape the head before curing it.
