Tyer Recipe

  • Hook 1X long dry fly hook, barbless, #12-16 (tied on a #12)
  • Thread Tan (or black, or to match the body) 70 denier

Materials

  • Body hackle (rib) Grizzly body hackle (One dry fly feather, palmered)
  • Body Natural hare's ear (Synthetic dry fly dubbing)
  • Wing Natural snowshoe hare's foot (A small tuft of snowshoe hare's foot)
  • Thorax hackle Grizzly thorax hackle (One dry fly feather, palmered)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a base of tan 70 denier thread on a #12 1X long dry fly hook back to the start of the bend.
  2. Tie in a grizzly dry fly hackle at the bend, concave side toward the hook, leaving a bare stem long enough to reach about two-thirds up the body; snip the stub.
  3. Wax the thread and dub a natural-colored body forward over the rear two-thirds of the shank, about a two-inch noodle.
  4. Palmer the grizzly hackle forward in about four fairly open turns to the thread and tie it off, keeping the excess feather pointing down off the bottom of the hook so it stays out of your way for the next step; trim.
  5. Spin the thread clockwise to cord it up tight, then tie in a small tuft of snowshoe hare's foot as a downwing reaching to about the bend, holding the hackle out of the way; take several tight wraps forward and snip the butts.
  6. Take a few extra wraps to smooth and clean up the wing butts.
  7. Dub the thorax with the same dubbing. It is fine, even preferable, if the thorax is a little fuller than the body.
  8. Tie in and palmer a second grizzly hackle over the thorax with four or five turns set closer together than on the body; tie off.
  9. Push everything back to make room, whip finish a small head, snip the excess feather and trim any hairs clogging the eye. Otherwise leave it messy.
