Start black thread behind a white bead on a curved shank hook and build the taper using the one-bead, two-bead method rather than the usual three. Because this fly carries an extra body material, cutting a step out of the taper is what keeps the finished pupa slim.
Catch the black wire in behind the bead and run it down the shank to the back.
Tie in root beer Buzzer Wrap with just two turns at the rear, then add speckled copper Flashabou by doubling it around the hook and letting it slide down. It locks itself in as you wrap and adds almost no bulk.
Smooth the underbody forward with even thread wraps, then wrap the Flashabou up the shank. Do not panic if a little black thread shows through. The material is speckled with black anyway.
Keep the tie-off wraps minimal at the front since two more materials still have to come off there, then wrap the root beer Buzzer Wrap over the flash. That overlay is exactly where the amber-gold-copper Goldie colour comes from.
Counter-wrap the black wire forward for six or seven segments, whip finish, seat the knot, trim and coat with superglue for durability.
When the goldies are out the fish key on them hard. This is a fly worth having in the box before you need it.
