Fly Fish 402 dressing

  • Hook Fulling Mill FM 5045, 14
  • Thread Veevus Black 10/0

Materials

  • Bead Saluda Beads Slotted Tungsten Silver 3.3mm
  • Body Semperfli Perdigon Body Iridescent Purple
  • Rib UTC Ultra Wire Silver Small ( )
  • Thorax Ice Dub UV Black ( )
  • Collar CDC Natural Dun ( )

How to tie it

  1. Slide the 3.3mm Saluda slotted tungsten bead onto the hook and lay a smooth thread base down the shank.
  2. Tie in the pink Glo-Brite floss tag at the back of the hook, spinning the thread counterclockwise as you go so it flattens and the underbody stays smooth.
  3. Tuck the small silver UTC Ultra Wire into the slot of the bead, run it down the side of the hook and bind it back to the tag tie-in, then carry the thread forward to the front.
  4. Wrap the iridescent purple Semperfli Perdigon Body forward in touching turns — the material is thin enough that it barely overlaps, so any gaps read as extra segmentation — and tie it off at the front.
  5. Rib forward over the body with open turns of the silver wire, bind it down and helicopter the tag off.
  6. Trim the floss tag square, level with the back end of the hook.
  7. Dub a small bump of UV Black Ice Dub behind the bead as the base of the thorax.
  8. Split the thread, lay the Natural Dun CDC into the split, and spin the thread clockwise to cord it back up into a brush.
  9. Wrap the CDC brush as a collar, pulling all the fibers back with each turn, then rip them to the length you want with your fingernails.
  10. Add one last very short pinch of Ice Dub in front of the collar — just enough to go round the fly a couple of times — to hold the CDC fibers swept back, then finish off in the small gap behind the eye.
