Mount a standard wet hook and start red thread behind the eye; wind smooth touching turns back to the bend.
Tie in a short tag of red wool at the bend so a stub of about half a hook-gap projects; trim it square. This is the red tail flash.
Tie in a length of gold tinsel for the rib at the bend and let it hang.
Tie in a brown-red cock hackle by its butt at the bend for the body hackle, then dub a red-brown wool or seal body forward in touching turns, stopping one eye-length behind the eye.
Palmer the body hackle forward through the body in open, evenly spaced turns to the front; hold it there and let the rib lock it.
Counter-wrap the gold rib forward through the palmered hackle in four or five turns, wiggling it through the fibers so it traps the hackle stem without matting the barbs; tie off at the front and trim.
Take one or two extra turns of hackle at the front for a fuller collar if wanted, sweep the fibers back, build a small red head, whip finish, and varnish.
