Darrell Olson dressing
Hook GCO 9221, 16
Thread Red 8/0
Materials
Body Hareline Dubbin, Cinnamon Caddis
Hackle Starling Hackle from the back of the skin
How to tie it
Start the red 8/0 thread behind the eye and wrap back to about where the barb would be on this barbless size 16.
Touch a sparse pinch of Hareline Dubbin in Cinnamon Caddis onto the thread — on a hook this small only a few fibers, barely pulled from the packet — and twist it into a thin noodle.
Wrap the dubbing forward over the shank, adding a second small pinch if the body looks thin, and stop short of the eye to leave room for the hackle.
Strip the fluff from a Starling Hackle taken from the back of the skin and cut a small triangle notch at the tip to make the tie-in point; on hooks this size the starling fibers come out about the right length on their own.
Bind the notched tip in behind the eye and grip the feather in hackle pliers.
Take three wraps of the starling, sweeping the fibers back; the fibers should reach roughly to the hook point.
Snip the stem and whip finish twice behind the eye.
