Classic Recipe

• Hook 3x long dry fly, 6-10
• Thread Orange 6/0

Materials

• Tail Red goose or elk (short)
• Body Orange floss or dubbing (full)
• Wing Natural elk or squirrel tail (long, flat)
• Hackle Brown, heavy (collar)

How to tie it

1. Tie short tail
2. Build orange body
3. Tie long flat wing to bend
4. Heavy hackle collar
5. Whip finish

Substitutions

• Wing instead of Elk hair: Bull elk hair — Stiffer for the big down-wing; Deer hair — Finer on smaller sizes
• Body instead of Red floss: Red Uni-Stretch — Smoother, does not fray; Orange dubbing — Salmonfly variant
