Joe Penich Custom Flies dressing

  • Hook AHREX GB Predator Swimbait, 2/0

Materials

  • Eyes 10 mm Silver 3-D Eyes mounted on 100 lb test monofilament
  • Tail Wing White Icelandic Sheep’s fur, Pearl Ice Dub Schimmer Fringe and Grey Polar Fiber
  • Weight 035 Diameter Lead Wire

How to tie it

  1. Start 6/0 white thread at the 90-degree bend of the swimbait hook and mount 10 mm silver 3D eyes on 100 lb mono with figure-eight wraps, then cement.
  2. At the rear of the straight shank tie a white Icelandic sheep fur belly underneath, pearl Shimmer Fringe on the far side and light grey Polar Fibre on top, then wrap.035 lead wire in the centre of the threaded body leaving a gap each side. That centred lead is the keel that makes the fly swim upright.
  3. Build the body in split-thread Ice Dub collars (light blue, then darker blue) brushing each noodle out thoroughly before wrapping so it stays translucent, and add a shorter sheep fur wing block after each collar so the profile tapers forward.
  4. Work the third dark blue collar right up to and between the eyes with figure-eight wraps, then add the last white belly, blue Angel Hair sides and grey sheep fur back in front of the eyes.
  5. Pull all the fibers back under tension, wrap a white collar behind the eyes, bury a dozen wetted pearl flash strands into each side, then overwrap with red thread, cement, and epoxy the collar.
  6. Ahead of the collar add a silver grey Ice Dub head collar, a final short sheep fur wing, a red Polar Fibre throat, dyed blue grizzly hackles on each side and long peacock herl over the top.
  7. Finish with a red thread head and cement, then lay the fly flat and add evenly spaced parr-style black marks along both sides with a waterproof marker before epoxying the head.
