Snowshoe Emerger

Emerger · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook curved emerger (Dai-Riki 125), 14-24
  • Thread olive or brown-olive 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Tail/shuck Pheasant-tail fibers (or trailing Antron) (3-4)
  • Abdomen Pheasant-tail fibers or olive rabbit dubbing (as needed)
  • Thorax Chocolate-brown or dark olive Antron/rabbit dubbing (as needed)
  • Wing Snowshoe rabbit's-foot hair (sparse clump)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base down the curve and tie in 3-4 pheasant-tail fibers at the bend as a short shuck/tail.
  2. Wrap the pheasant-tail fibers (or dub olive rabbit) forward to form a slim segmented abdomen over the rear two-thirds.
  3. Prepare the wing: snip a clump from the heel of a snowshoe rabbit's foot, remove the fluff and most guard hairs, leaving a sparse bunch of the buoyant middle hairs.
  4. Tie the snowshoe clump in as a short upright emerging wing about one shank length long, pointing up and slightly forward.
  5. Dub a contrasting darker thorax fore and aft of the wing to lock it in place.
  6. Whip finish a small head; the snowshoe hair floats the fly with no floatant needed.
