Materials
Slotted bead Orange slotted bead (1)
Rabbit strip Brown olive rabbit strip (One strip (marabou also works))
Arizona Simi Seal dubbing Peacock arizona simi seal dubbing (70% of the dubbing loop)
Ice Dub Chocolate (30% of the dubbing loop)
How to tie it
Set an Ahrex FW550 jig hook with an orange slotted bead and start rusty brown thread. The orange bead is the hot spot and the jig hook keeps the point riding up out of the weed.
Tie in a brown olive rabbit strip as the tail. Marabou works fine here too. Rabbit gives you more push in the water, marabou more flutter on the drop.
Blend the dubbing 70/30: seventy percent peacock Arizona Simi Seal to thirty percent chocolate Ice Dub. The peacock brings the buggy iridescence, the chocolate warms it down so it does not read too green.
Load the blend into a dubbing loop, spin it and brush it out thoroughly before wrapping. Brushing is what frees the long guard fibres that make a leech look alive.
Wrap the loop forward to behind the bead, tie it off and trim the excess.
Whip finish, dab glue or resin on the thread wraps, and brush the whole fly out hard. Fish it at ice-off and again in late fall. It works all year but those are the windows it shines.
