Classic Recipe

  • Hook Tiemco 811S, 1/0-2
  • Thread Fluorescent fire orange Single-strand nylon floss

Materials

  • Weedguard Hard mono loop, eye to bend (1 piece)
  • Tail White bucktail with grizzly hackles, silver Flashabou, lime Krystal Flash (1 clump + 2-4 feathers)
  • Butt Shell pink chenille (2-3 turns)
  • Head/collar White and natural deer hair with a black band, spun and trimmed (3-4 clumps)
  • Eyes 9mm 3D plastic eyes, blue/black (1 pair)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in the mono weedguard at the bend first, leaving the loop end hanging back to anchor at the eye later. This fly lives in the mangrove roots.
  2. At the bend, tie a tail of white bucktail flanked by grizzly hackles, with silver Flashabou and lime green Krystal Flash, about two shank lengths long.
  3. Wrap 2-3 turns of shell pink chenille in front of the tail as a butt/egg collar.
  4. Spin clumps of dyed white deer hair up the shank, adding a clump of natural/black hair mid-head to create a dark center band, packing tightly.
  5. Bring the weedguard mono forward, bind it under the head at the eye, whip finish, and trim the head to a broad, flat-bottomed slider shape with a collar of tips left flowing back.
  6. Glue a 9mm blue 3D eye into each side of the trimmed head.
