Snapping Shrimp

Shrimp · Bonefish · Permit · Redfish · Sea Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Gamakatsu SL45 or Tiemco 811S, 4-8
  • Thread Tan 6/0 or 70-denier

Materials

  • Butt Fluorescent orange dubbing (small amount)
  • Tail Tan craft fur (small clump)
  • Flash Gold or pearl Krystal Flash (2 strands)
  • Eyes Small bead chain (1 pair)
  • Body Tan dubbing (small amount)
  • Wing Tan craft fur over legs (small clump)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread behind the eye and figure-eight a pair of bead chain eyes on top of the shank one eye-length back, so the fly rides hook point up.
  2. At the bend, dub a small hot-orange butt. This imitates the enlarged snapping claw of the real snapping shrimp and is the trigger point of the fly.
  3. Tie in a sparse clump of tan craft fur one shank length long as the tail, with two strands of Krystal Flash alongside.
  4. Dub a slim tan body forward in touching turns, stopping just behind the bead chain eyes.
  5. Flip the hook and tie in a wing of tan craft fur over the hook point, extending to the tail tips. It shields the point for fishing over grass.
  6. Whip finish in front of the eyes and cement.
