Hook 1X long dry fly hook, barbless, #12-16 (tied on a #12)
Thread Black 70 denier
Materials
Tail Olive or brown goose biot (2 goose biots)
Body Orange rabbit fur dubbing (Rabbit fur dubbing)
Wings Olive or brown goose biot (2 goose biots)
Hackle Grizzly hackle (One dry fly feather)
How to tie it
Lay a base of 70 denier black thread on a #12 1X long dry fly hook back to the start of the bend.
Lay two goose biots on top of the shank crossed in an X and take a couple of loose wraps; check the split, adjust, then lock them in so the tails fork at about 30 degrees. If you can't get both right in one try, tie them in one at a time instead.
Bind the biot butts forward (or trim them). The dubbed body will cover any bulk.
Wax the thread and dub a fairly thick orange rabbit body forward, taking it a little farther up the shank than you would on a normal dry, to about the 75% point.
Bring the thread back onto the front of the dubbed body and lay two more biots on top in an X, at the same angle as the tail or a touch wider, with a couple of loose wraps; adjust them so they sit up a little, then lock them in. Tying them onto the dubbing rather than the bare shank keeps them from canting too far up.
Snip the front ends of the biots off and build a flat area in front of the wings for the hackle.
Tie a grizzly dry fly hackle in just in front of the wings, concave side toward the hook, leaving a little bare stem; snip the butt close.
Wrap five or six heavy turns of grizzly hackle, take the thread back a couple of turns and catch it off with two wraps.
Pull the hackle back and whip finish quickly before the fibers spring forward, then snip the excess feather, trim any strays and add a drop of head cement.
