Body Black hare's mask dubbing (Black hare's mask dubbing, roughly 60/40 with black rabbit)
Beard Brown beard (10-15 rooster/saddle hackle fibers)
Hackle Starling or blackbird (One small wing feather with tan tips)
How to tie it
Lay a base of black 8/0 thread on a #12 1X long wet fly hook all the way back to the bend.
Tie in medium silver wire along the near side of the hook, keeping it parallel to the shank; the oversized rib is part of the look.
Blend black hare's mask (plucked from under the ear and above the eye socket) with black rabbit and dub a fat, football-shaped body forward to about the 85% point, taking two noodles if you need to.
Counter-wrap the silver rib forward in evenly spaced turns to bind down the guard hairs; secure with a couple of wraps, helicopter it off and bury the sharp stub with a few loose wraps.
A couple of eye-lengths back, tie a bunch of 10-15 brown hackle fibers in under the shank as a beard, reaching to just past the hook point; adjust the length and trim the butts.
Prep a small starling wing feather by stripping off the side without the tan tips; tie it in by the tip with two wraps, fold the stem back, add a couple more wraps and snip the tip off.
Using hackle pliers, take about four turns of the soft hackle, stroking the fibers back as you wrap; tie off on top with two wraps and snip the stem as close as you can.
Hold the fibers back with your material hand, ramp the thread forward to the eye and build a neat head that catches the fiber bases without laying them flat.
Whip finish four or five turns and add a drop of head cement; trim any guard hairs you don't like.
