Smashed Caddis

Dry Fly · Emerger · Trout · Advanced · 1 version

Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Standard-length dry fly hook, #12-18 (tied on a #14)
  • Thread Brown 70 denier (8/0)

Materials

  • Shuck Light brown/tan z-lon (Half a strand of Z-Lon (or Antron))
  • Body Olive brown material (A thin noodle of Superfine dry fly dubbing)
  • Wing Natural good deer hair (Small clump of good deer hair (not coarse spinning hair))
  • Finish Clear drop resin (A tiny drop of UV resin)

How to tie it

  1. Mount a #14 standard dry fly hook and lay a base of brown thread back to the start of the bend.
  2. Tie in half a strand of Z-Lon at the bend as a trailing shuck, leaving it long for now, and bind the butt ends forward with loose wraps as an underbody; return the thread to the bend.
  3. Wax the thread and dub a thin, tapered olive brown body forward to about the 75% point.
  4. Cut, clean and stack a small clump of deer hair; measure the tips to reach the bend of the hook and catch it in at the front of the body with a pinch wrap, letting it flare.
  5. Before adding more wraps, take a couple of wraps underneath the hair to prop the wing up, then one or two tight wraps on top.
  6. Whip finish four or five turns while the butt ends are still standing (much easier than after trimming), then trim the butts off square to leave a short caddis head.
  7. Trim the Z-Lon shuck to about one body length.
  8. Smash the deer hair wing down flat and pull the fibers out to either side, evening the two halves; use a bodkin on each side to push them farther down and snip a few fibers out of the middle so the wings read as two.
  9. Put a tiny drop of UV resin on top of the thread wraps and let it wick into the base of the splayed wings, then cure.
