  • Hook Mustad nymph hook, 14
  • Thread Black 70 denier

Materials

  • Tungsten half beads, 2.8mm Hot pink and light pink tungsten half beads, 2.8mm (2 (one pair))
  • Coq de Leon fibres Natural coq de leon fibre (Tail)
  • Ultra wire Silver ultra wire (One length)
  • Flashabou (pearl orange / tangerine) Pearl orange flashabou (2 strands)
  • Nail polish Black nail polish (Wing case)
  • UV resin Clear uv resin (Full body coat)

How to tie it

  1. Seat a pair of 2.8mm tungsten half beads on a size 14 nymph hook. Slide them together and work them around until they lock, then tug them tight. Two colours locked face to face give you a two-tone hot spot without needing thread or paint.
  2. Start black 70 denier behind the beads and tie in a Coq de Leon tail about a body length long, keeping the fibres right on top of the shank. Coq de Leon is stiff enough to hold its splay in fast creek water.
  3. Tie in silver ultra wire and leave the tag pointing forward so you can use it to keep the underbody even as you build it.
  4. Tie in two strands of pearl orange Flashabou at the rear and wrap them forward. It looks orange on the spool but ends up reading distinctly green on the fly, a very bright pattern for coloured summer creek water.
  5. Rib the wire forward in even turns, tie it off, helicopter it out and put in a quick three or four turn whip finish so a short black thread collar sits behind the beads.
  6. Dab black fast-dry nail polish on top for the wing case, let it set, then coat the entire fly in UV resin and cure. A perdigon is a sinking machine. The resin shell is what makes it cut through the current to the fish.
  7. Fish it in back-country creeks and streams for small trout in the hot months.
