The feather bender dressing

  • Hook Mustad Heritage Extra long Dry R43, 14

Materials

  • Tying thread Sheer 14/0 brown
  • Body Peacock herl
  • Under wing Two CDC hackles
  • Over wing Mottled turkey
  • Hackle Grizzle saddle

How to tie it

  1. Attach the brown Sheer 14/0 tying thread behind the eye and run a base back down the shank, stopping short of the bend; remove the tag.
  2. Tie in two peacock herl together, bind them back down the shank and bring the thread forward again, leaving the front of the shank clear for the wings and hackle.
  3. Keeping the two herls together, wind them forward as the body, finish short of the front, tie them off and remove the surplus.
  4. Tie two CDC hackles in flat on top as the under wing, just a little longer than the body, so they lie flat and veil the body. Remove the surplus and secure the butts a little further forward.
  5. Take one slip of mottled turkey for the over wing, set it on top with a couple of loose turns and position it, then pinch the second slip in alongside it. Secure both and tie the ends down.
  6. Prepare a grizzle saddle hackle, stripping a little more off the leading edge than the other side, tie it in and wind a dense collar hackle; tie it off.
  7. Whip finish and remove the tying thread.
