Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard nymph, 16-20
  • Thread Black 10/0

Materials

  • Tail Dun fibers (sparse)
  • Body Black thread (slim)
  • Rib Fine silver wire (spiral)
  • Wingcase Pearl flash (strip)
  • Thorax Peacock herl (2 turns)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the small nymph hook and start black 10/0 thread behind the eye. Run it to the bend.
  2. Tie in a sparse few dun fibers as a short tail, no more than a hook gap long.
  3. Tie in fine silver wire at the tail, then build a very slim smooth black thread body forward to the 70% mark.
  4. Spiral the silver wire forward in 5-6 open even turns as the rib, tie off and helicopter to break.
  5. Tie in a strip of pearl flash at the 70% mark pointing forward over the eye (this becomes the wingcase).
  6. Wind 2 turns of peacock herl for a small thorax at the front.
  7. Pull the pearl flash forward over the thorax, tie down as a wingcase, trim, whip finish and cement.
