Skating CDC and Hare Sedge

Dry Fly · Trout · Grayling · Intermediate · 1 version

Lucian Vasies

  • Hook Demmon D400 BL dry hook, 12-14
  • Thread Red 70 denier

Materials

  • Body Light olive troutline spiky dubbing (Troutline Spiky Dubbing)
  • Ribbing Blue flat perdigon tinsel (UV flat perdigon tinsel)
  • Wing Khaki (dyed CDC in a dubbing loop)
  • Hackle Natural hackle (Transylvanian hare guard hair in a dubbing loop)

How to tie it

  1. Start red 70 denier thread on the D400 and run a base to the bend, letting a turn or two of red show at the rear as a subtle trigger point.
  2. Tie in the blue UV flat perdigon tinsel, then dub a light olive spiky body forward to the 60% mark.
  3. Rib forward with the blue UV tinsel in open turns and tie off. The blue is an unusual choice on a sedge, but it flashes at the fish's eye level as the fly skates across the surface.
  4. Spin khaki-dyed CDC in a dubbing loop and wrap it as the wing. Putting CDC in a loop rather than tying it in as a bunch means every barb stands out independently, which is what holds the fly up when you drag it.
  5. Spin Transylvanian hare guard hair in a second dubbing loop and wrap two turns in front as the hackle, then stroke it back. Stiff guard hair is what lets this fly be skated without collapsing. Soft feathers just fold flat.
  6. Whip finish and fish it actively: cast across and draw or twitch it so it skates like an adult sedge running on the surface.
