Simple Little Glassworm

Nymph · Midge · Stillwater · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

BCFlyguys

  • Hook Togen curved nymph hook, 16
  • Thread blue dun UTC 70

Materials

  • Body Grey (clear also works) (midge size Liquid Lace)
  • Markings Black markings (Sharpie, one dot at each end)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thin blue dun thread base on a size 16 curved nymph hook. Thin is the operative word. A glassworm is almost transparent, so any bulk underneath ruins the illusion.
  2. Prepare the Liquid Lace by touching a lighter to the end and pulling. That flattens it and leaves a thin tag you can tie in without building a lump.
  3. Bind the Liquid Lace in with tight wraps at the back, squashing it down, and keep the underbody smooth all the way forward.
  4. Mark a small black dot at the rear of the body and another at the front with a Sharpie. Those two dots are the head and tail spots that make an otherwise clear fly read as a Chaoborus larva.
  5. Give the Liquid Lace a good tug to even it out and wrap it forward in touching turns.
  6. Secure with a couple of tight wraps, pull, trim and go straight into a whip finish.
