Classic Recipe
- Hook Steelhead iron (Mustad 7999), 4-10
- Thread Black 6/0
Materials
- Tail Teal or mallard flank fibers (small bunch)
- Rib Oval Silver Tinsel (1)
- Body Black chenille (1 strand)
- Wing Grizzly hackle tips (2)
- Collar Grizzly hackle (1)
How to tie it
- Tie in a tail of barred teal or mallard flank fibers, about half a shank length long.
- Tie in the oval silver rib, then the black chenille; wrap the body forward in touching turns to two eye-widths behind the eye.
- Spiral the rib forward in 4-5 evenly spaced turns.
- Tie in two grizzly hackle tips as a wing, one on each side, curving outward and reaching the tail. The splayed barred wings breathe as the fly swings.
- Take 2-3 turns of grizzly hackle as a collar and sweep it back.
- Form a small black head, whip finish, and cement.
