Reference Recipe

  • Hook straight-eye streamer hook, 1/0-6
  • Thread white 6/0, plus GSP for the deer hair

Materials

  • Tail Olive ostrich herl (one rabbit zonker strip)
  • Belly weight/bead Gold bead (3/16 in tungsten bead, one)
  • Belly flash UV pearl crystal flash (Ice Dub, small pinch)
  • Gill pack Red buzzer wrap (Ice Dub, small pinch)
  • Collar Barred UV material (Senyo Predator Wrap, one length)
  • Head Olive/natural material (deer hair, 3-4 clumps)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread mid-shank and tie in an olive rabbit-strip tail about 1.5 shank lengths long, hiding the hook point under the fur.
  2. Slide a gold tungsten bead onto the shank ahead of the tail for belly weight and lock it with thread dams front and back.
  3. Dub a stripe of UV pearl Ice Dub along the underside forward of the bead as the belly.
  4. Build a hot gill pack of red Ice Dub, then wrap a collar of barred Predator Wrap and sweep it back.
  5. Switch to GSP thread. Stack a clump of deer hair, spin it around the shank, and pack it tight.
  6. Add and pack 2-3 more clumps to the eye, keeping the belly hair sparse and the top dense.
  7. Whip finish at the eye, then trim the head flat and wide like a sculpin (broad on top, shaved flat underneath) leaving a swept collar.
  8. Cement the whip finish and the thread base beneath the hair.
