Hook curved emerger hook (TMC 2487; 2488 in the smaller sizes), 16-20
Materials
Butt flash Mirage tinsel (1 strand, a few wraps)
Body Small natural quill, olive (1 quill)
Adhesive Superglue under the quill body (a tiny amount)
Hot spot Glo-Brite no. 1 (1 strand, doubled)
Wing CDC (3 feathers)
Thorax Squirrel dub (the tiniest pinch)
How to tie it
Pinch the barb on a size 16 curved emerger hook and mount it. Start the thread around the middle of the shank and trim the tag.
Run the thread down round the bend, back forward and down again, finishing at about where the barb would be or just past it.
Tie in a piece of Mirage tinsel there, run the thread back up the shank and then take a few wraps of the tinsel to make a bright spot on the butt of the fly, a trigger point rather than a true hot spot. Capture it with the thread, trim and tidy the stub.
Tie in a small natural olive quill right up against the flash, run the thread back up, trim and then build a natural taper along the body with the thread. It does not need to be perfect.
Attach hackle pliers to the quill and set them down gently, these quills break very easily.
Put a tiny amount of superglue on the thread body so the quill is not destroyed by fishes' teeth, then wrap the quill forward in touching wraps, capture it and trim.
Take a strand of Glo-Brite no. 1, double it over, trim the two ends flush and tie it in on top of the shank.
Prepare three CDC feathers by cutting the tip out of each so you are left with fibres rather than stem, then line all three up so the tips are even.
Bring the CDC tips forward over the eye and put in a pinch wrap with all of them together, then set the length you want and take a couple of wraps in front so the wing sits up on top. It will try to spin, so trim the butts and come back in carefully to tighten everything down, with securing wraps in front.
Dub a tiny noodle of squirrel dub, take it behind the wing and then a couple of turns in front to tidy the fly up.
Bring the Glo-Brite forward over the top, splitting the wing slightly as it goes so the fibres are pushed up on top, and take a couple of wraps over it and back, then quite a few in front.
Whip finish a couple of times to lock everything in, and cut the thread away.
Pull the Glo-Brite forward, leave only a small hot spot showing and trim it off.
Pinch all the CDC fibres forward together and trim them level.
