Reference Recipe

  • Hook curved saltwater/scud hook, 6-10
  • Thread olive 8/0 (70D)

Materials

  • Underbody weight Natural case (8-10 turns lead-free wire)
  • Eyes Silver metal tape (small bead chain, one pair)
  • Antennae Olive/pearl material (few strands Krystal Flash)
  • Body dubbing Olive ice dub (small pinch shrimp dubbing)
  • Shellback Olive thin skin mottled (one strip scud back)
  • Rib Gold middle (fine wire, one length)
  • Legs/hackle Grizzly-olive webby soft hackle (one saddle hackle)

How to tie it

  1. Wrap 8-10 turns of lead-free wire around the mid-shank, shove the coil to center, and lock it with thread. This is the weight.
  2. Under the shank at the front third, figure-8 the small silver bead chain eyes (a shrimp swims eyes-forward).
  3. At the bend tie in olive Krystal Flash antennae one shank past the bend, plus the gold wire and the olive scud-back strip.
  4. Dub a tapered olive body over the lead forward to just behind the eyes.
  5. Palmer the grizzly-olive hackle back through the body in 4-5 open turns for legs and tie it off.
  6. Draw the scud back over the top and bind it behind the eyes.
  7. Rib the gold wire forward 5-6 turns, wiggling it through the hackle so it doesn't trap fibers, then helicopter it off.
  8. Build a small head, whip finish, and cement.
