Shrimp Scud

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved-shank scud/shrimp hook, 12-18
  • Thread Tan, olive or pink 8/0

Materials

  • Lead-free wire (optional) Silver lead free wire (6-8 turns)
  • Body Tan/olive/pink scud dubbing (1 pinch)
  • Shellback Clear Scud Back or plastic strip (1 strip)
  • Rib Fine clear mono or wire (1 strand)
  • Antennae / tail (optional) Wood duck or Antron fibers (few fibers)

How to tie it

  1. Add a few wraps of wire along the shank for weight if you want it to ride deep, then start thread.
  2. At the bend tie in a few short fibers for the tail/antennae, the clear shellback strip, and the mono rib, all pointing rearward.
  3. Dub a plump, slightly humped body forward around the hook's curve to the eye, following the bend so it looks like a scud's arched back.
  4. Pull the clear shellback over the top of the body and bind it down at the eye.
  5. Spiral the mono rib forward over the shellback in 6-7 even turns, segmenting the back, and tie off.
  6. Pick out the dubbing along the belly with a bodkin to suggest the many swimming legs.
  7. Whip finish at the eye, snip, and add a drop of head cement; a thin coat of UV resin on the shellback adds durability and shine.
