Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard saltwater hook, 2-6
  • Thread Tan or pink 3/0

Materials

  • Tail Tan/pink bucktail + Krystal Flash (1 clump + few strands)
  • Body Tan/pink Estaz or chenille (1 length)
  • Shellback / lip 2mm closed-cell foam (1 strip)
  • Legs (optional) Rubber (1-2 pair)
  • Antennae Krystal Flash (few strands)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread at the eye and lay a base back to the bend.
  2. Tie in a bucktail tail about one shank long with a few strands of flash and a couple of longer antennae strands.
  3. At the bend tie in a strip of foam pointing rearward (to become the shellback and lip) and a length of Estaz.
  4. Wrap the Estaz forward to just behind the eye to make a full body, adding rubber legs to the sides midway if desired.
  5. Pull the foam strip forward over the top of the body as a shellback and bind it down behind the eye, leaving a short tab of foam projecting past the eye as the gurgling lip.
  6. Trim the lip to a small square that will push water and make a wake.
  7. Whip finish behind the lip, snip, and seal with a drop of flexible cement.
