Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard saltwater/streamer hook, 2-6
  • Thread Tan or pink 3/0

Materials

  • Eyes Bead-chain or lead dumbbell (1 pair)
  • Tail Tan/pink marabou + Krystal Flash (1 plume + few strands)
  • Antennae Tan/pink Krystal Flash or rubber (few strands)
  • Body Tan/pink chenille or dubbing (1 length)
  • Hackle Tan/grizzly saddle, palmered (1 feather)
  • Weedguard (optional) Mono (1 loop)

How to tie it

  1. Tie the bead-chain or dumbbell eyes on top of the shank near the eye so the fly rides hook-point-up over flats bottom.
  2. At the bend tie in a marabou tail about one shank long with a few strands of flash and a couple of longer strands for shrimp antennae.
  3. Tie in a saddle hackle by the tip and a length of chenille at the bend.
  4. Wrap the chenille forward to behind the eyes to form the body, then figure-8 around the eyes and tie off in front.
  5. Palmer the hackle forward in 5-6 open turns to the eyes and tie off, then stroke the fibers down and back like swimming legs.
  6. Add a mono weedguard at the eye if fishing grass, then build a small head.
  7. Whip finish, snip, and add a drop of cement.
