Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard wide-gap wet/streamer hook, 6-10
  • Thread To match (tan/olive) 3/0 or GSP

Materials

  • Dumbbell eyes Lead, painted (1 pair)
  • Tail / legs Marabou and rubber legs (1 clump + 2 pair)
  • Flash Krystal Flash (few strands)
  • Body Deer/elk hair, spun and stacked (several bundles)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread near the bend and tie the dumbbell eyes on the underside of the shank close to the bend, so the finished fly sinks and lands butt-up, hook-point-up.
  2. Behind the eyes tie in a short marabou tail with a couple of rubber legs and a strand or two of flash, keeping it stubby.
  3. Spin a bundle of deer hair in front of the tail, pack it back tight, and repeat forward, stacking and packing bundles to fill the shank up to behind the eyes.
  4. Add rubber legs into a stacked bundle so they splay to the sides.
  5. Whip finish at the eye behind the hook eye and remove the fly from the vise.
  6. Trim the spun hair to a short, compact wedge, flat on the bottom and rounded on top, so it slides and lands nose-down, butt-up.
  7. Touch the thread wraps and eye base with a drop of cement.
