Reference Recipe

  • Hook Kinked-shank popper/bass-bug hook, 2-8
  • Thread Black or to match 3/0

Materials

  • Body Cork or hard foam, flat/slanted face (1 preformed head)
  • Tail Bucktail (color to match) (1 clump)
  • Tail hackle Saddle hackles (2-4)
  • Flash Krystal Flash (few strands)
  • Legs Round rubber legs (2-3 pair)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the kinked popper hook and build a thread base over the rear half of the shank.
  2. Tie in a bucktail tail about one body length long, add a few splayed saddle hackles to frame it, and a few strands of flash.
  3. Whip finish and cement the tie-in point where the body will be glued.
  4. Cement the pre-shaped cork or foam body onto the shank with the flat/slanted face forward.
  5. Insert rubber legs through the body sides so they kick out to each side.
  6. Let the glue cure, then add painted or stick-on eyes and a coat of finish if desired, and seal the thread with cement.
