Reference Recipe

  • Hook Kinked-shank popper/bass-bug hook, 2-6
  • Thread Black or to match 3/0

Materials

  • Body Cork or hard closed-cell foam, cupped face (1 preformed head)
  • Tail Bucktail (color to match) (1 clump)
  • Tail hackle Saddle hackles, matched color (2-4)
  • Flash Krystal Flash (few strands)
  • Legs Round rubber legs (2-3 pair)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the kinked popper hook and lay a thread base over the rear shank where the body will sit.
  2. Tie in a bucktail tail about one body length long, then flank it with a few splayed saddle hackles and a few strands of flash.
  3. Wrap a thread base and whip finish where the cork/foam body will glue on, so the head sits ahead of the tail.
  4. Glue the pre-cupped body onto the shank with the concave face pointing forward, this hollow face is what chugs and pushes water.
  5. Poke or tie rubber legs through the sides of the body so they splay out for a kicking silhouette.
  6. Once the glue sets, touch up with paint or eyes if desired and seal the tie-in with a drop of head cement.
