Start thread at the bend and tie in a brown hackle by the tip.
Take 3-4 turns of the brown hackle right at the bend as a rear collar, tie it off, and stroke the fibers rearward, this back-set hackle is what makes the pattern.
Tie in two or three strands of peacock herl, twist them with the tying thread into a rope for durability, and wrap forward to build a full body, stopping short of the eye.
Select 12-15 mallard flank fibers and tie them in flat on top of the shank as a wing, so the tips reach back to but not past the rear hackle.
Build a neat thread head, whip finish, snip, and add a drop of cement.
