Shark's Caddis Larva-Beadhead

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved-shank scud/caddis hook, 12-16
  • Thread Olive or brown 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Gold bead (1)
  • Lead-free wire Silver lead free wire (6-8 turns)
  • Body dubbing Bright caddis green or olive (1 pinch)
  • Rib Fine gold wire (1 strand)
  • Thorax / collar Peacock herl or dark brown dubbing (1-2 strands)
  • Legs Brown partridge or Hungarian partridge (few fibers)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the gold bead to the eye, add a few wire wraps behind it to weight the fly and jam the bead forward.
  2. Start thread and tie in the gold rib at the bend.
  3. Dub a slim, curved caddis-green abdomen forward around the bend and up to the 70% mark, following the hook's curve so it looks like the humped larva.
  4. Counter-wrap the gold rib forward in 6-7 even turns to segment the body and tie off.
  5. Tie in and wrap two turns of peacock herl (or dub a dark collar) behind the bead for the dark head/thorax.
  6. Sweep a few partridge fibers to each side as short legs and bind.
  7. Whip finish behind the bead, snip, and add a drop of cement.
