Reference Recipe

  • Hook 3XL curved-shank nymph hook, 6-10
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Cone head Black or copper cone head (1)
  • Lead-free wire Silver lead free wire (10-12 turns)
  • Tail Black goose biots (2)
  • Body dubbing Black buggy/Ice-blend dubbing (1 pinch)
  • Rib Copper wire (1 strand)
  • Legs Black rubber/Sili legs (2-3 pair)
  • Wing case Black Thin Skin or turkey (1 strip)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the cone onto the hook to the eye, then wrap a wire underbody behind it and shove it up to lock the cone; this loads the front to dive nose-first.
  2. Start thread and tie in two splayed black biots at the bend for a forked tail one gap wide.
  3. Bind in the copper rib and a strip of Thin Skin at the bend.
  4. Dub a fat, shaggy body forward over the front two thirds, deliberately picking it rough so it looks buggy.
  5. At the 60% mark tie in a pair of rubber legs to each side, then dub a touch more.
  6. Pull the Thin Skin over as a wing case, bind, add a second set of legs, and dub a short thorax to the cone.
  7. Counter-wrap the copper rib forward through the body in 5-6 turns to segment and reinforce, tie off, whip finish behind the cone, and cement.
