Sexy Hex

Reference Recipe

  • Hook long-shank dry fly, 6-10
  • Thread yellow 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Microfibbets or moose hair Cream hackle fibers (2-3 (tails))
  • Foam or dubbing Pale yellow/cream dubbing (extended body)
  • Deer hair or poly yarn Yellow/dun deer hair or poly yarn (1 clump (wing post))
  • Dubbing Yellow superfine dubbing (for thorax)
  • Hackle Grizzly and ginger hackle (1-2 feathers)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base. Tie in a few stiff tailing fibers at the bend, splayed, about a shank long. The Hex dun trails long tails.
  2. Bind on a pale-yellow foam extended body (or dub one) reaching well past the bend; Hex duns are big, so build a long, segmented abdomen.
  3. Tie in an upright wing of deer hair or poly yarn at the 65% mark and post it vertical.
  4. Dub a yellow thorax around the base of the wing.
  5. Wrap a grizzly and/or ginger hackle 4-5 turns around the post and thorax for flotation, then tie off.
  6. Whip finish at the eye and cement.
