Classic Recipe

  • Hook Articulated streamer, 2-4
  • Thread Black or olive 6/0

Materials

  • Rear hook Marabou + flash (full tail)
  • Connection Beadalon wire (20lb)
  • Body Dubbing brush or chenille (palmered)
  • Collar Deer hair or marabou (flared)
  • Head Spun deer hair (sculpin shape)
  • Eyes Lead dumbbell (1 pair)
  • Flash Flashabou (throughout)

How to tie it

  1. Build the rear section first: on the trailer hook, tie a full marabou tail with flash, then a marabou collar. Set it aside.
  2. On the front hook, loop 20lb Beadalon wire through the rear hook's eye and bind the wire doubled along the front shank. The hinge must swing freely side to side.
  3. Build the front body with a dubbing brush or chenille, palmered full.
  4. Add a flared collar of deer hair or marabou.
  5. Spin and pack deer hair for the head, then trim to a broad sculpin wedge. Flat bottom, wide cheeks.
  6. Tie in dumbbell eyes at the head. Whip finish and cement hard.

Substitutions

  • Body instead of Dubbing brush or chenille: Laser Dub brush — Flashy, sculpts well; Frenzy Brush — Pre-made dubbing brush; Crosscut rabbit on shank — Maximum movement; EP Foxy Brush — Tapered fibers, baitfish profile
  • Head instead of Spun deer hair: Fish-Skull Sculpin Head — Way faster, consistent shape; Laser Dub over lead eyes — Bulky head without spinning hair
  • Connection instead of Beadalon wire: Fish-Skull Articulated Shank — Purpose-built, very clean; Interlocking shanks — Multiple connection points; 20lb Fireline or Berkley — More flexible connection
