Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry fly, 14-18
  • Thread black 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Black foam Black craft foam mm (1 strip (hook-gap wide))
  • Peacock herl Peacock ice dub (2-3 strands)
  • Rubber legs Black ostrich herl (1 pair (optional))
  • Bright foam or poly Orange/pink bright foam or poly (tiny tuft (sight point))

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base to the bend. Tie in a strip of black foam by one end at the bend, pointing back over the hook.
  2. Wrap peacock herl forward to just behind the eye for a fat little body.
  3. Optional: knot a pair of rubber legs to each side at mid-body.
  4. Pull the foam forward over the back to form the shell and bind it down behind the eye.
  5. Set a tiny bright foam or poly tuft on top as a sight point if you want one.
  6. Trim the foam head short, whip finish under the foam, and cement.
