Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry fly, 12-16
  • Thread tan 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Dubbing Olive/green dubbing (small amount)
  • Brown hackle Brown hackle (1 feather (optional palmer))
  • Deer hair Natural deer hair (1 clump (wing + head))

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base to the bend. Dub a slim, tapered body of olive-green dubbing to the 65% mark.
  2. Optional: palmer a brown hackle over the body, then trim it flush top and bottom so the fly can sit low.
  3. Stack a clump of deer hair and tie it in as a down-wing tent over the body, tips reaching just past the bend.
  4. Rather than trim the butts flush, lift them and take firm thread turns to flare a short deer-hair collar/head.
  5. Trim the flared butts to a stubby head, cutting it flat underneath so the fly rides low and flush in the film.
  6. Whip finish at the eye and cement.
