Secret Scud

Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 2 versions

Note: Contested against a published dressing: Only two of our four materials survive: the clear Scud Back shell and a wire rib (silver in the source, gold in ours). The published body is light gray OSTRICH HERL over a hare's ear underbody, not our 'scud dubbing with UV/sparkle in tan/olive/pink'. Reference Recipe

  • Hook curved scud/pupa hook, 14-18
  • Thread tan 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Scud dubbing (with UV/sparkle) Tan/olive/pink scud dubbing (small amount)
  • Antron Tan antron (short tuft (tail))
  • Scud back / thin skin Clear scud back thin skin (1 strip)
  • Wire Gold wire (fine, 1 length)

How to tie it

  1. Lock the hook in and lay a thread base. Tie in the wire rib and a clear shellback strip at the bend.
  2. Add a short Antron tail, about one hook gap long.
  3. Dub a plump, humped translucent body forward to the eye.
  4. Pull the shellback over the back and bind it down behind the eye.
  5. Counter-rib forward with the wire in 5-6 open turns; helicopter off the tag.
  6. Pick out the belly dubbing for legs, whip finish, and cement.
