Pectoral fins Hen hackle or Thin Skin (wide, swept back)

How to tie it
Mount hook, wrap 15-20 turns of heavy lead wire on the front half of the shank. Push it forward against the eye for weight distribution.
Tie in a short tail at the bend, rabbit strip or marabou, no more than half a shank length. Sculpins have stubby tails.
Build a full body forward with dubbing or chenille to the 60% mark. Taper it wider toward the front. Sculpins have a tapered body.
Tie in pectoral fins at each side, wide hen hackle feathers or Thin Skin cut to shape. They should sweep back at about 45 degrees, extending about one hook gap out from each side.
Tie in dumbbell eyes on the underside of the shank. When the fly flips hook-up, these become the top.
Spin deer hair from the 60% mark to the eye, packing each clump tightly. Use a hair packer if you have one. Density is critical.
Trim the deer hair to a broad, flat sculpin shape. Flat on the bottom, wider than it is tall. The profile should be like a flattened disc from the front.
