Reference Recipe

  • Hook 4XL streamer, 2-6
  • Thread brown 210 denier

Materials

  • Lead-free wire - (10-12 wraps (optional))
  • Rabbit strip or marabou Mottled brown/olive rabbit strip or marabou (1 (tail))
  • Krystal Flash Copper flashabou (4 strands)
  • Dubbing or chenille Mottled brown dubbing or chenille (1 length)
  • Deer hair Natural/olive deer hair (several clumps (head))

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base to the bend; optionally add lead-free wraps under the front third to help it get down.
  2. Tie in a marabou or rabbit-strip tail one shank long, with a couple of flash strands.
  3. Dub or wrap a mottled body forward to the 60% mark.
  4. Spin bunches of deer hair from the 60% mark to the eye, packing each clump tight against the last.
  5. Whip finish at the eye.
  6. Trim the deer hair to a broad, flat-bottomed sculpin head with a swept collar. Blunt and wide on top, flat underneath so it planes and slides rather than rolls.
