Sculpin Helmet

Streamer · Trout · Smallmouth Bass · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Streamer, 3x long, 2-8
  • Thread Olive 6/0

Materials

  • Head Fish-Skull Sculpin Helmet (1)
  • Body Pine squirrel or rabbit zonker (palmered)
  • Tail Marabou (short)
  • Flash Flashabou (sparse)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the sculpin helmet onto the hook before mounting in the vise. Choose the helmet size to match your hook.
  2. Start thread behind the helmet. Tie in a short marabou tail at the bend, about half a shank length.
  3. Add 4-5 strands of sparse flash alongside the tail.
  4. Tie in a pine squirrel or rabbit zonker strip at the bend by the leather side. Palmer it forward in touching wraps. The fur should stand out from the body at each turn.
  5. Tie off the zonker strip behind the helmet. Build a thread dam to hold it in place.
  6. Whip finish behind the helmet. Secure the helmet with a drop of UV resin or super glue where it meets the thread.
