InTheRiffle dressing

  • Hook Tiemco 5263, 2-06
  • Thread Black UTC 140

Materials

  • Head Brown Sculpin Helmet
  • Tail Black marabou
  • Flash Pearl flashabou
  • Body Black chenille
  • Rib Brassie Copper Wire
  • Hackle Grizzly Rooster Cape
  • Gills Red marabou

How to tie it

  1. Start black UTC 140 thread on the Tiemco 5263 and lay a thread base along the shank.
  2. Even the tips of two plumes of black Marabou, measure the Tail about three quarters of the shank, and secure it on top.
  3. Rather than cutting the butts straight away, wrap the thread forward over them so the streamer body stays even, then trim the excess and wrap back through it to lock it in.
  4. Wrap two strands of pearl Flashabou around the thread, hold one to each side of the hook, and wrap back to the tail. Trim the flash to the length of the tail.
  5. Tie in a generous piece of brassie copper wire along the near side of the shank and let it hang off the back.
  6. Tie in medium black Chenille and wrap a uniform body forward, stopping well short of the eye to leave room for the Sculpin Helmet.
  7. Tie in a grizzly rooster Hackle at the front and palmer it back toward the tail in open turns.
  8. Bring the copper wire forward through the hackle in open turns. It locks the hackle so it cannot unwind and segments the body. Tie off the wire and trim the excess hackle.
  9. Tie a short plume of red Marabou on each side for the Gills, about a third of the hook length, doing one side at a time and trimming each to match.
  10. Clean up the head and build the thread base out until the sculpin helmet fits over it, giving the glue and helmet something to grab, then whip finish.
  11. Brush Zap-a-Gap over the whole head, push the Sculpin Helmet on with the keel facing up and the eye recesses facing down, and hold it until the glue sets.
  12. Flip the fly, put a spot of the same glue in each eye recess, and scoot a stick-on eye into place with a fingertip, pressing it home.
