Reference Recipe

  • Hook 4XL streamer, 2-6
  • Thread brown 210 denier

Materials

  • Dumbbell eyes Lead/black (1 pair)
  • Rabbit strip (Zonker) Olive or brown rabbit strip (1 strip (tail))
  • Cross-cut rabbit strip Olive or brown rabbit strip (1 strip (body))
  • Krystal Flash Pearl/copper flash (6 strands)
  • Deer hair Mottled natural deer hair (2-3 clumps (head))

How to tie it

  1. Lash a pair of dumbbell eyes on top of the shank near the hook eye so the fly rides hook-point-up; lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Tie in a rabbit-strip tail one-and-a-half shanks long at the bend, with a few flash strands each side.
  3. Tie in a cross-cut rabbit strip at the bend with the fur sweeping back.
  4. Palmer the cross-cut strip forward to just behind the eyes, stroking the fur back on each wrap so it doesn't bind under the thread; tie off.
  5. Spin or stack clumps of deer hair between and around the eyes to build a broad head, packing each tight.
  6. Whip finish at the eye, then trim the deer hair to a flat, wide sculpin wedge. Wide across the eyes, flat underneath. Cement the thread.
