Streamer · Trout · Smallmouth Bass · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 3XL streamer, 4-8
  • Thread brown 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Cone head Gold/brown cone head (1 (to fit hook))
  • Marabou Olive or brown marabou (1 tail plume)
  • Krystal Flash Copper flashabou (4 strands)
  • Variegated chenille Brown/olive variegated chenille (1 length)
  • Webby hackle Brown hackle (1 feather)
  • Deer hair Natural deer hair (1 clump (optional collar))

How to tie it

  1. Slide a brown/gold cone to the eye (weight plus a sculpin's blunt head), lock the hook in, and lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Tie in an olive or brown marabou tail one shank long, with a couple of flash strands each side.
  3. Tie in a webby hackle by its tip and a length of variegated chenille at the bend.
  4. Wrap the chenille forward to the cone, then palmer the hackle back through it in 5-6 open turns and tie off.
  5. Optional: spin a small clump of deer hair behind the cone and trim it flat for a fuller sculpin head.
  6. Whip finish behind the cone and cement.
