Scud Bomb

Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook curved scud or jig hook, 12-16
  • Thread hot pink 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Slotted tungsten bead Gold bead (1 (oversized))
  • Lead-free wire - (8-10 wraps)
  • Scud dubbing Tan/olive scud dubbing (small amount)
  • Scud back / thin skin Clear scud back thin skin (1 strip)
  • Wire Gold wire (fine, 1 length)

How to tie it

  1. Push a slotted tungsten bead to the eye of a curved or jig hook, then wrap 8-10 turns of lead-free wire behind it and jam them up into the bead. This is the 'bomb' that drops the fly fast.
  2. Lay a thread base over the lead and tie in the wire rib and a scud-back strip at the bend.
  3. Dub a fat, humped body forward over the lead underbody to the bead.
  4. Pull the shellback over the top and bind it behind the bead.
  5. Rib forward with the wire in 5-6 open counter-wraps and break off the tag.
  6. Brush out the belly dubbing for legs, whip finish, and cement.
