Materials
Ice dub or similar synthetic sparkle dubbing Peacock black or any dark color with flash (A 2 inch noodle (underbody))
Foam Black craft foam mm (1 piece of 2 mm foam, cut to an egg/oval shape, about a hook-gap wide and 1.5 times the body length)
Rubber legs Black ostrich herl (1 doubled piece)
Foam Yellow (white, green or orange all work) (1 small piece of 2 mm (indicator))
Hackle Grizzly dyed brown, green or olive hackle (1 feather (wrapped parachute-style))
How to tie it
Start black 140 denier thread (heavier thread makes foam much easier) and lay a base to the start of the bend.
Wax the thread and dub a roughly two-inch noodle of dark synthetic sparkle dubbing; wrap an underbody forward almost to the eye, then take the thread back so it hangs about a third of the way back from the eye.
Cut a rough egg/oval of 2 mm black foam about a hook gap wide and one and a half times the body length. Tie it in at the hanging thread with the rear section extending just past the bend of the hook; the front section will become the head.
Lay down a wide band of thread wraps, not tight, across the foam to create a flat, banded tie-down area.
Fold a piece of black rubber leg material, pull out plenty of slack thread, and secure it on that band with five or six very loose wraps so the legs can be positioned coming off both sides; only then add one or two tighter wraps.
Trim the legs to size, cutting the front pair slightly shorter than the back so it doesn't look like a panfish spider.
Tie a small piece of bright 2 mm foam in on top as an indicator, letting it flare up under several wraps, then trim it. Front a little shorter than the back.
Prepare a grizzly hackle dyed brown, green or olive by trimming a few barbs short at the base; tie it in on the near side of the indicator post with three wraps, tip pointing forward.
Wrap the hackle parachute-style around the base, over the legs but under the indicator, for two or three turns, then tie it off by zigzagging the hanging thread through the barbs two or three times, coming out underneath. (A drop of super glue at the post before wrapping helps stop it spinning.)
Run the thread up to the eye, whip finish, trim the hackle tip, and trim the foam head shorter. Beetle heads are small.
