Materials

  • Marabou White marabou (Generous clump (tail))
  • Ultra wire Silver wire (One length)
  • Schlappen Blue dun schlappen (1 feather)
  • UV Ice Dub Grey uv ice dub (Rear three quarters of the body)
  • Arizona Simi Seal dubbing Red ice dub (Front quarter)

How to tie it

  1. Start red thread on a size 8 streamer hook and tie in a generous clump of white marabou for the tail. Generous is deliberate. This is meant to look like a wounded baitfish, not a nymph.
  2. Add silver ultra wire for the rib, then tie a blue dun schlappen feather in by its tip and leave it out the back. Tip-first means the fibre length grows as you palmer forward, which tapers the fly for you.
  3. Dub about three quarters of the body with grey UV Ice Dub, working forward from the bend.
  4. Finish the front quarter with red Arizona Simi Seal. That red shoulder is the hot spot. It reads as gills or a wound and is what the whole pattern hangs on.
  5. Palmer the schlappen forward in open spirals, adding two extra turns at the head, then tie it off and trim. Long webby schlappen fibres breathe on the pause in a way hackle cannot.
  6. Fluff everything forward to open a path, counter-rib the silver wire through to lock the hackle stem down, tie off and whip finish. Brush it out and fish it.
