Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet fly, 8-14
  • Thread Red 8/0

Materials

  • Tag Flat gold tinsel (short)
  • Tail Red hackle fibers or red quill slip (small bunch)
  • Rib Flat gold tinsel (fine)
  • Body Red floss (slim)
  • Hackle Red (scarlet-dyed) hen hackle (1)
  • Wing Red-dyed duck quill slips (1 pair)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a short gold tag at the bend, then tie in the red tail, half a shank length.
  2. Tie in the gold rib and wrap the red floss body to the 75% mark.
  3. Rib with 4-5 open turns of tinsel.
  4. Take 2-3 turns of scarlet hen hackle and sweep it down as a throat.
  5. Set matched red duck-quill wings low over the body and finish with a red head.
