Sawyer's Bow Tie Buzzer Variation

Reference Recipe

  • Hook wet/nymph or curved buzzer hook, 10-14
  • Thread none (fine copper wire) or brown 8/0 fine copper wire

Materials

  • Copper wire (fine) Natural copper wire (1 length)
  • Cock pheasant tail fibers Natural pheasant tail fibers (1 bunch)
  • Antron or wool (bow tie) White poly yarn (small tuft)

How to tie it

  1. Catch a length of fine copper wire on at the eye and wind it back to the bend, building a smooth underbody.
  2. Tie in a bunch of cock pheasant tail fibers by their tips at the bend using the wire (no thread).
  3. Wind the pheasant tail and wire together forward as a rope to form a slim, segmented abdomen up to the thorax.
  4. Build a pronounced thorax hump by folding the wire back and forth, then bind the pheasant fibers over the top as a wing case.
  5. Secure at the eye with the wire and helicopter off the excess.
  6. Figure-8 a short tuft of white Antron across the eye so a small ball projects each side, then trim to two tiny 'gill' tufts.
  7. Twist the wire to lock and add a touch of varnish at the head.
