Materials
Bead Silver bead (1, sized to the hook (2.8 mm on a #12))
Lead-free wire (8-9 wraps behind the bead)
Squirrel body hair Natural case (A small bunch, just under 1/2 inch (tail))
Squirrel dubbing blend (natural squirrel with a little grey acrylic yarn, coffee-ground blended) Natural grey-brown (any color works) (A 3-3.5 inch noodle (body))
Ice dub Black with UV (almost purple) (A thick pinch (thorax))
How to tie it
Slide a silver bead onto the hook, then put eight or nine wraps of lead-free wire on behind it (a tip: spool your wire onto an old bobbin holder to minimise waste), break off the wire and squish the nub down close to the shank.
Start 140 denier thread behind the weight, take a couple of wraps over the wire, and run it back to where the barb would be. Do NOT trim the tag end. Park it out of the way with a magnet, because it becomes the rib.
Tie in a small bunch of squirrel body hair (easiest pulled from a zonker strip) for the tail, just under half an inch long, with a pinch wrap; bind the butts down.
Wax the thread and spin a three to three-and-a-half inch noodle of the squirrel dubbing blend; wrap it forward to just short of the bead, leaving room for the thorax.
Take the reserved thread tag and counter-wrap it forward over the body as an open rib, mainly for durability, then tie it off.
Wax the thread again and dub a thick, tight thorax of black UV ice dub right behind the bead; a thorax slightly fatter than the body is what you want.
Whip finish behind the bead.
Rough the whole body and thorax up with Velcro on a popsicle stick, pulling the fibers out to give the fly life in the water.
